I've been to Spofforth Castle quite a few times, it is allegedly haunted by the blue lady, people say she took her own life by throwing herself from the tower. Now, I have frozen my whatnots off here waiting for this shade to turn up; I even stood out in the cold until 2am on Christmas Eve! Its a cute place, set in the small hamlet of Spofforth 'Spoff' as we used to refer to it. We usually stay in the undercroft, it's really sheltered from the elements and there is a staircase that goes to nowhere, which comes in very handy on cold nights, the stones hold in quite a bit of warmth from the day. There is even a cute little window ledge for putting you flask, sandwiches and maltezers on :D I didn't hold much hope of been witness to anything paranormal at the castle, it almost always appeared 'dead'. Months were spent going back-and-fro and nothing! Not a sausage. Then one night, it happened! I was stood in an enclosed bit of of the undercroft and I saw for just a few seconds an electric blue circular light reflecting back off a side-wall. I tried to rationalise it, but couldn't find a good explanation for it. No one else saw it to corroborate if for me. Unfortunate this could be suggestion on my part as I know the story, but I saw it plain and simple. I was really pleased, maybe this is what people have been seeing? I can't say for sure that there isn't something atmospheric going on, its a damp old place, why blue? I am not sure it's anything paranormal, don't know for sure. I don't suffer from cyanopsia. It's got this sceptic thinking.

A blue figure has been seen at the top of this tower, before plummeting to the ground below. |
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteVery interesting site, what your doing is very similar to what my wife and I do.
Here is an extract from a book I am writing, this paragraph is part of a section about Spofforth Castle.
I conducted two investigations at Spofforth Castle, the second being the most interesting. One November evening I was waiting just outside the grounds of the castle waiting for others to turn up. There was a heavy frost and the temperature was around minus two degrees. After standing at the path gate for about ten minutes I heard the distinct sound of swords, it was as if two people were fighting, I never found the source. Later that night we also heard the sound of horse’s hooves from within the confines of the castle walls, the interesting thing here is that the castle is a ruin, no roof exists, and the floor is now grass, yet the sound was as if the horses were galloping over stone flooring.

Hi, i also do investigations, and visited spoff yesterday. I had recorder running for EVP session, and the split second i entered the castle i could not get eyes off the tower for some reason. Felt as though somebody was stood there. As i was sat crouched in 1 corner looking at the tower, i saw an almighty bright blue "smudge" wizz down the tower wall.I immediatly ruled out sunlight, as it was dark, so, maybe it was the woman that fell ?
ReplyDeleteWe will be going back there soon for another stint.
Very interesting comments... Trevor, the blue light is strange, I know we have heard the story and are set up to misinterpretation and suggestion, but you know what you see with your own eyes. I have no idea what this effect is, there could be something natural occurring, but its a strange one.
ReplyDeletethe wall i was crouched against ,there was a half bricked up hole behind me. i didnt feel at all comfy there but stayed about half hour motionless, just listening to nothing.
ReplyDeleteon playing back the EVP with headphones on, can clearly hear a female voice saying "behind you". in the room next to it, i got a "wooden door latch" opening sound. i asked out if they trying to make me cold (cos it suddenly went bitter cold), and on evp is a deep husky voice saying yes. will be going back regular now for more sessions.
Has anyone heard feint music playing around the tower area? My son & I both heard what sounded like chamber music independently.
